We finally got to After the Fall and are in a hurry to share our impressions.

Friv2Online Studio is one of those teams that keeps VR platforms up to date with really high quality releases. Their most famous work is the horror shooter Arizona Sunshine, which has been deservedly considered one of the best VR games for the sixth year.

Arizona Sunshine had everything we love zombie shooters for: a fascinating plot with humor and horror elements, a good arsenal and impact, nice graphics and level design. She lacked one thing - an adequate cooperative regime.

Designed for a solo playthrough, Arizona Sunshine offered only a mediocre "horde" for the group, where a few comrades, standing back to back, try to defeat as many dead as possible until they unwind their guts across the desert. But even this was enough to lure a group of friends to a VR club where you can happily shoot zombies.

However, to create their own Left 4 Dead for virtual reality Friv2Online Studio set out firmly. And even the presence of a very serious competitor in the face of Candymakers with their SURV1V3 did not prevent After the Fall from becoming the most advanced 4 Player Co-op VR game in the end.

The events of After the Fall take place in an alternate reality on the territory of the destroyed Los Angeles. Because of the climate catastrophe, the second ice age has begun in the world. Experiments aimed at developing humanity's resistance to cold led to terrible mutations, monsters flooded the streets, and the survivors hid underground.

Circumstances lead your hero to the cleaners' hub, organized on the territory of the metro station. From time to time, a group of daredevils venture outside the Frontier (in The Line) to thin out the accumulations of snowy undead in nearby areas and collect the so-called extract from their bodies, which is used to prepare a cure for freezing.

Despite the fact that two decades have passed since the arrival of eternal winter, technological progress literally froze in the era of the 1980s. For this reason, the scenery and equipment in the friv game are a little bit retrofuturistic, but without gory neon and blasters: electronic music, antediluvian computers, artisanal weapons with microcircuits attached to them, and of course arcade machines.

I still don’t understand how the plot of After the Fall justifies them, but the machines in this world have turned into robotic terminals, with the help of which players gather in raids, purchase guns and upgrades, replenish supplies: pick up a light gun and choose something then in the menu of the machine.

Similar to Left 4 Dead, in the main After the Fall mode, players in a group of four (if there are no people or not enough, the system replaces them with quite tolerable bots) go to clear and explore levels, defeat bosses, and even participate in so-called panic events, where you need to complete tasks and fight off the horde in parallel.

During missions, participants earn extract and find floppy disks with upgrades or new types of weapons, with the help of which they improve their combat potential in the hub on the eve of the next sortie.

This is the best adaptation of the Left 4 Dead mechanics to date, adjusted for the features of VR headsets. As with Turtle Rock, players will need to react quickly and shoot accurately, otherwise they will quickly run out of ammo and the snowdrops will get to them.

It is noteworthy that the killed player does not fall to the ground, but freezes in place, and if the partner has an antifreeze syringe, he can be returned to duty. Death here comes in the form of a deep freeze, which not only fits well into the lore, but also saves developers from having to “drop” the player in VR glasses to the ground.

According to the law of the genre, the levels are separated by zones with arcade machines for replenishing consumables. The player can carry up to two items and up to two weapons on their belt. If you explore the location and find a valuable floppy disk, you will have to drop a bomb or syringe to make room in your inventory.

The shooting mechanics are borrowed from the Arizona Sunshine: the weapon feels good, the sights are not knocked down, the butts do not interfere, the two-handed grip works correctly. It is possible, as before, to shoot in Macedonian at the cost of increased recoil. In a word, the impact in the game is exemplary, Friv2Online Studio understand something about this.

The design of the levels is discreet, but curious and varied, with branches and even secret passages where you can find a valuable floppy disk or weapons. If you survive, take both the upgrade and the cannon with you. In After the Fall, there is no warehouse or even a backpack, but everything you get is yours as long as the avatar is alive.

Monsters do not crawl out of nowhere - the levels display places and bleeding holes where snowdrops can nest. I counted several types of simple zombies alone: from slow walkers to crawling on ceilings, running and protected by ice shells of varying degrees of strength.

There are also bosses in the game, like a nimble thug, a hefty and deadly juggernaut in police armor, an exploding fat man or a real giant, from whom you need to stay away, shooting weak spots on his massive body. In virtual reality, it becomes much scarier when you notice a large individual in the ranks of the horde.

After the Fall has great graphics, almost at the level of Half-Life Alix: high-resolution textures, realistic shadows, detailed scenery, beautiful character models and terribly believable monsters.

Let's add here a lot of interactive objects with which you can interact, and the partial destructibility of the environment under a hail of bullets. But most importantly - a well-functioning hit registration, which even the newly minted Back 4 Blood cannot boast of.

Monsters' limbs fly off, growths break off, skulls burst, and pieces of frosted flesh torn out by a large caliber expose their insides. Shoot off the leg of the snowdrop - it will crawl, shoot off the hands - it will try to get you with its teeth.

The developers have come up with a good progress system. After the Fall has several types of firearms (pistols, SMGs, assault rifles, shotguns) with dozens of modifications and customization elements. Almost everything is inaccessible at first - you should close the story tasks, look for floppy disks with mods.

There is a special machine in the workshop that accepts the extract in exchange for trunks and improvements for them. Moreover, you attach all the improvements yourself by placing the weapon on a workbench, and dismantle it yourself using a welding machine.

Among other things, the avatar can also be changed. At the moment, After the Fall has several dozen skins, most of which will become available only if certain conditions are met. For example, when completing a story or killing a certain number of snow undead.

There are several modes and difficulty levels available in After the Fall. There are now six massive co-op levels in the main Harvest Mode. Each of them can be run on one of four difficulty levels: from the simplest, where partners are not really needed, to insanely difficult, where injuries are unacceptable and enemies are extremely ferocious.

The higher the difficulty, the higher the reward, and the more rare floppy disks you will have a chance to find. In addition to the campaign, there is the classic endless Horde mode, which for some reason is still very popular with local players, as well as a PVP match where survivors compete with each other.

After the Fall is demanding on hardware, but with flexible graphics settings. Players can manually simplify shadow maps and adjust texture resolutions, change anti-aliasing and rendering levels, and simplify monster models. Not just to choose between quality and performance, as is often the case with VR applications, but to adapt the game to the system.

Friv2Online Studio did not forget about the accessibility settings either: sitting and standing modes, setting up tunnel vision with determining the vignette radius and types of movement. You can set the height of the holster and calibrate the height, select the type of grip, even turn off the weapon weight parameter. Everything that is necessary for a comfortable game in virtual reality is taken into account.

Unfortunately, there are no melee weapons in After the Fall. This friv game is exclusively about a shooting range, and if you run out of ammunition, you will have to urgently look for a container or die in the hope that your teammates will fight off a wave of monsters. Despite the fact that weapon mechanics with the consumption of stamina for VR projects have already been invented and work well, Friv2Online Studio decided to do without them for now.

The matchmaker doesn't work well. There are a lot of players in the hub, but it is almost impossible to find a partner for an initial or medium difficulty using the terminal. The only working way to raid with other players is to join someone else's group or form your own. But in the first case, you will be doomed to hardcore, in the second, you will lose your partners if the difficulty or the selected mode does not suit them.

Why it was impossible to fasten the “quick game” option to the terminal without choosing a level, but with a choice of difficulty, or giving the opportunity to join the current session instead of a bot is the main mystery of After the Fall. In my opinion, the success of a cooperative project largely depends on how easy it is for users to find a group to play together.
