On a visit to Seattle in 1997, John Christensen observed workers at Pike Place Fish Market in Seattle tossing trout and salmon through the air to each other in the early morning hours. While covered in fish guts, and continuously sticking their hands into ice, the workers kept their spirits high and put on a show for their growing crowd.
Christensen noticed the actual work of selling fish was repetitive, cold and exhausting. It occurred to him that the fishmongers might not enjoy every part of their job, but they chose to bring joy to how they approached it. In doing so, they sold A LOT of fish!
From this experience, the Fish Philosophy was created and identifies four practices to enhance workplace attitude and teamwork:

- CHOOSE YOUR ATTITUDE
- BE THERE
- MAKE THEIR DAY
